According to recent reports, it has been found that an individual’s happiness is based on how happy their spouse is. If you have a happy spouse, it will not only lead to a long marriage, but also be the key to a longer life. This is not a random theory, but is actually a published study in the journal Psychological Science.
This study was ongoing for 8 years where the participants and their spouses reported on life satisfaction and various factors hypothesized to be related to mortality. This study shows that spousal life satisfaction was associated with mortality, regardless of individuals' socioeconomic or physical health status.
The research found that spouses’ life satisfaction is an even better predictor of participants' mortality than a participants' own life satisfaction. In the study,it was found that the participants who had a happy partner at the beginning of the study were less likely to pass away over the next 8 years compared to the participants who had not so happy partners.
The study lasted for 8 years and by the end of the study 16 per cent of participants had passed away. The participants who passed away tended to be older, male, less educated, less wealthy, less physically active, and in poorer health than those who were still alive. On deeper inspection, the participants who died also tended to report lower relationship satisfaction, lower life satisfaction, and having a partner who also reported lower life satisfaction.
