Ram Jethmalani, Eminent Supreme Court Lawyer and Former Law Minister, Passes Away at 96

Ram Jethmalani, eminent Supreme Court lawyer, and former union law minister, passed away at his residence on Sunday, just six days short of his 96th birthday.

Ram Jethmalani, eminent Supreme Court lawyer, and former union law minister, passed away at his residence on Sunday, just six days short of his 96th birthday. 

Ram Jethmalani breathed his last at 7:45 am at his official residence, said by his son Mahesh Jethmalani. 

His son Mahesh said Ram Jethmalani was not feeling well for the last few months. Also, added his last rites will be performed today evening at the Lodhi Road crematorium. 

Ram Jethmalani was born on 14 September 1923, he is an eminent lawyer and politician. He had served as India's Union Law Minister and as chairman of the Bar Council of India. 

Ram Jethmalani often faced severe criticism for handling high-profile to the controversial case and he was the top highest paid lawyer in the supreme court of India. 

Ram Jethmalani has handled many high-profile cases like the 1962 Nanavati Case, the Emergency during Indira Gandhi's tenure, Indira Gandhi's assassination case, Rajiv Gandhi's assassination case, and the Harshad Mehta scam case. 

At the age of 17, he obtained an LL.B.degree. He married Durga Jethmalani after that his second wife, Ratna Jethmalani. Later he moved to Mumbai as a refugee and he started his life afresh with his family. 

He has 2 sons and 2 daughters with Mahesh Jethmalani and his second wife Rani Jethmalani is also a well-known lawyers list in India. On 10 September 2017, he announced his retirement from the judicial profession. 

He was elected a member of parliament in the 6th and 7th Lok Sabha on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket from Mumbai.

He has served as Law Minister of India also as Minister of Urban Development during the prime ministership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee against whom he later contested election in the general elections of 2004 from Lucknow constituency. In 2010 again he was back to BJP and elected to Rajya Sabha on its ticket from Rajasthan. 

He is a well-known lawyer amongst the top legal community in India. He was one of the lawyers who represented Harshad Mehta during the Harshad Mehta scam and the Narasimha Rao bribery case from 1993 to 1998.  He was elected as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association on 7 May 2010.
