The Bombay High Court cancelled four petitions challenging the cutting of trees at Mumbai's Aarey Colony for a metro car shed, the process in the green belt began on Friday evening.
However, Activists gathered at Aarey Colony after a video showing a tree being cutted which went viral on social media. The activists said that trees are being cut illegally.
Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in the area and More than 29 people have been arrested by the Mumbai Police. According to reports, Twenty-nine people were arrested, Section 144 imposed and roads leading to Aarey blocked by police as protesters escalated their fight to save Mumbai’s ‘green lung’, a day after the Bombay HC gave its nod to the felling of over 2,500 trees for the Metro project.
On Friday, the high court refused to recognize Aarey as a forest, allowing the authorities to cut down trees for the construction of a shed for the Mumbai Metro.
However, Priyanka Chaturvedi tweeted: On my way to #aarey and main entry points to the site have been blocked by Mumbai Police! #SaveAarey.' After that she was detained by Mumbai police. After their detantion, she again tweeted and wrote, 'I have been forcibly evicted by the cops and I wasn't even breaking the law! The cops in the car won't even tell me where I am being taken ... this is insane @MumbaiPolice.'
