Rakhi popularly known as Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in India in the month of Shravan, which generally falls in July or August. This year, we will be celebrating Raksha Bandhan on August 3.

It is generally celebrated with Narali pournima major festival of fisherman in Maharashtra. In Sanskrit, Raksha Bandhan simply means ‘the bond of protection, obligation, or care’ and thus it signifies the bond between a sister and her brother.

Hindus around the world believe that the festival has many historical and mythological significance. In Mahabharata, when Lord Krishna had cut his finger while using his divine discus, Draupadi had dressed up his wound using the loose end of her saree, and was promised by her safety and security.

Another story of Rakhi talks about Santoshi Maa where Subh Labh insisted lord Ganesha for having a sister after Naag Devi Mansa (sister of Ganesha) tied Rakhi to her brother.

A relationship expert in and exclusive interview stated “ During the rituals, brothers have to sit facing east, as it is believed to bring in new opportunities and prospects in their professional life. Along with Kumkum, a pinch of turmeric has to be added to prosperity. Instead of broken rice grains, always use full granules for the Tilak, for it can increase your brother’s wealth.”

Some Hindus also tie Rakhi to God like Ganesh and Krishna. As per mythology experts you should not tie Rakhi to idols of Sai Baba, Swami Samarth as they are gurus.
