Congress MP and Vasanth & Co founder H Vasanthakumar dies due to COVID-19

Congress MP from Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari, H Vasanthakumar (70), who had tested positive for the coronavirus, admitted to an Apollo Hospital in Chennai on August 10 has died. Hospital authorities in Chennai said. His condition deteriorated gradually due to Covid complication, and he passed away today at 6:55.

Congress MP from Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari, H Vasanthakumar (70), who had tested positive for the coronavirus, admitted to an Apollo Hospital in Chennai on August 10  has died. Hospital authorities in Chennai said. His condition deteriorated gradually due to Covid complication, and he passed away today at 6:55.

H Vasanthakumar had also been elected MLA twice in the past from the Nanguneri assembly constituency and was the working president of the state Congress committee.

The party said in a tweet. "He will be sorely missed by all members of the Congress party and his followers. Our prayers are with his family in this time of grief."

He is survived by his wife, who is also undergoing treatment for Covid-19, and son Vijay Vasanth who is an actor.

H Vasanthakumar was a prominent face in Tamil Nadu politics and was known for his chain of electronics stores and a TV channel.

He started his career as a salesman in the early 70s. In the year 1978 he started a home appliances sales showroom Vasanth & Co, which has grown to be a chain of showrooms operating in all the districts of Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru and Puducherry. He was the founder and chairman of Vasanth & Co, the largest retail home appliance chain in Tamil Nadu. He is also the founder and managing director of the Tamil satellite TV channel Vasanth TV.

India’s Covid-19 pandemic continued to escalate as a record 77,266 fresh were reported in 24 hours, union health ministry data showed on Friday morning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the family and reminisced that Vasanthakumar's strides in business and social service efforts were noteworthy.
