The famous name Muthappa rai is silent now.He left the world after fighting with brain cancer. The man who had presided over Bengaluru’s underworld for over 30 years,was sophisticated, educated and charming.
He was 68, suffering from brain cancer for the past one year and was admitted at Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road, where he died at 2.30 am, as per the sources. Rai is survived by wife and two sons.
The graduate was a shy man once and bumped into crime in late eighties. One murder changed his life and elevetad him as mafia don. Since organized mafia is almost dead in Bengaluru, perhaps Muthappa Rai was the last to rule the underworld in India’s IT city.
Karnataka police issued arrest warrants against Rai in eight cases, including murder and conspiracy. But he was later evicted due to lac of evidence.
Rai starred in the Tulu film Kanchilda Bale in 2011 and the Kannada film Katari Veera Surasundarangi in 2012. Bollywood director Ram Gopal wanted to make a film based on the life of Varma Rai, but for some reason the film got stuck.
After his cancer diagnosis, Rai withdrew from public life and resigned from Jaya Karnataka.His last rites are likely to be performed at Bidadi on Friday, family source.
